Mermaid Queen Savitri D., who went on hunger strike before Saturday’s annual Mermaid Parade at Coney Island to protest the area’s redevelopment, says that the city government violated the rules of the street. “Six weeks ago the city changed the plan over night without consulting the community at all,” she told Gothamist, referring to the city’s plans to preserve a smaller part of the amusement district. “New York street rules: you can’t change the deal in the middle of the deal!” Savitri D., director of the Church of Stop Shopping, is trying to rally opponents of the redevelopment to a public meeting Tuesday night. She is chatting online throughout her three-day hunger strike.
