The Abyssian Baptist Church at 138th Street in Harlem owns a real estate company that some residents say is gentrifying the neighborhood. The Abyssian Development Corp. was founded in 1989 and has developed about $500 million worth of property in Harlem. Some residents say the developer is a neglectful landlord, favors chain stores over small businesses and has pushed through projects the local community board opposed.
