ABT warehouse moves from LIC to NJ

 
The American Ballet Theatre last week relocated its warehouse facilities from Long Island City to a 71,000-square-foot space in Secaucus, N.J., providing a larger and less expensive space for its expanding number of costumes and production sets.

Officials at ABT, based at 890 Broadway, between 19th and 20th streets in Manhattan, said they wanted to upgrade to a larger space when the company’s LIC lease came up for renewal. 

The Manhattan-based dance company signed a 15-year deal to sublease 245 Secaucus Road from GMA Accessories, following an eight-month search for new space. The site beat out other ones in Secaucus and Jersey City, due to a combination of lower costs, modern facilities and a short commute into Manhattan, said Suzanne Sunshine, vice president of the nonprofit practice group at CB Richard Ellis, who represented ABT.
 
“They really could not afford to expand in Long Island City or elsewhere in Queens,” she said.

GMA Accessories owns the 189,000-square-foot building, which includes a former warehouse and costume shop on a 5.9-acre campus. ABT will pay $6.50 a square foot for the new facility, less than the company paid for its 50,000-square-foot Long Island City warehouse. Asking prices for new warehouse space in LIC are running about $12 a square foot, Sunshine said.

About a dozen employees have relocated from LIC into the new warehouse.

ABT is scheduled to open the 2008 season with a performance of Romeo and Juliet on October 21.
