A sweep of the businesses at Willets Point, across from Citi Field, resulted in the closure of 11 businesses for building violations on Thursday and Friday, before the Mets’ exhibition opener, according to state Senator Hiram Monserrate of Queens. Most of the closed stores were auto body shops. The city plans to redevelop the area with retail, 5,500 housing units, a hotel and a convention center. But Monserrate said the opening of the stadium does not give the city the right to shut down area businesses.
