Tenants take on building maintenance in exchange for rent breaks

The New York Times looks at buildings where landlords employ their tenants to act as part-time superintendents in exchange for rent discounts. Dan Brady, a Corcoran Group broker and actor, does part-time super duty for a 16-unit building in Bedford-Stuyvesant. He gets $600 per month in exchange for the work, half the rent of his two-bedroom apartment. But Brady said the work is time-consuming, because he sometimes has to handle landlord-tenant disputes or deal with the city regarding subsidized units. Other part-time supers have lighter duties, such as dealing with trash and recycling or letting exterminators into the building.
