No frat expansion in Morningside Heights: Columbia officials

Upper West Side residents need not worry about frat houses moving into neighborhood brownstones. While rumors recently emerged that the Greek system has been taking over Morningside Heights, with some reports claiming at least 30 percent of the Columbia University student population was pledging to a sorority or fraternity, the college came forward to dispute that figure, according to New York Magazine. It turns out that 254 women in the university system pledged Greek this year — definitely not 30 percent of the female population. And while the overall male and female Greek population has been steadily climbing, Columbia officials say there’s little reason to predict a major school-wide expansion of the program.
