While New York City is known more for high-rises than green lawns, around 27 percent of the five boroughs’ total area is comprised of private yards, according to the Wall Street Journal. The total acreage, 52,000, is nearly double the amount taken up by public parks — 28,000. Evan Morris, a researcher who tabulated the city’s private yards, said that New Yorkers might be more pastoral than many think. “There are a lot of New Yorkers who want to be green,” Morris said.
