A group of tenants at an eight-building Bronx rental complex filed suit today against New York Community Bank, which foreclosed on the properties in October 2009, according to Crain’s. The tenants are demanding that the bank make repairs to the complex, which currently has 1,538 building code violations, after it declined an $8 million bid from non-profit group Mutual Housing Association of New York York Management to buy the properties. The bid had been supported by the city Department of Housing Preservation and Development, but the bank allegedly has a $16 million offer in the works. Regardless of who purchases the complex, Mutual Housing executive director Ismene Speliotis said they will have their work cut out for them: the building’s 308 units will each need an average of $75,000 in repairs. The bank declined to comment. [Crain’s]
