Lotto scammer reneged on New Jersey mansion purchase: suit

Americo Lopes, a New Jersey construction worker who duped his co-workers out of their share of a $24 million winning lottery ticket, is back in court, this time for reneging on a $1.4 million home purchase in Boonton, N.J., the New York Post reported.

Lopes was unable to close on the house in 2010, after he lost a lawsuit from his co-workers, who contributed funds to the pool that won the New Jersey lotto in 2009, and was forced to split his winnings with them.

“He wanted to buy the house tomorrow. But then they were delaying, delaying, and then they just pulled out,” the mansion’s developer Joseph Sarra, told the Post. In his suit, Sanna alleges that the abrupt withdrawl by Lopes forced him to sell the 5,000-square-foot mansion on 5.24 acres quickly at a $150,000 discount. [Post]
