Habitat for Humanity helps NY vets find homes

The west side of Yonkers, a former industrial area, has plans to refurbish and sell six foreclosed homes to returning veterans, the New York Times reported. A Westchester affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, one of the 1,500 nationwide affiliates of the parent organization that’s helping veterans become homeowners after their return, is also painting buildings and growing gardens in the area in an effort to make it feel more like home.

The median price for a Westchester single-family home is $500,000, according to the Times, putting it among the highest in the country. Habitat’s main focus in the effort is providing qualified veterans with mortgages valued at roughly $175,000 each. The mortgages come interest-free and don’t require a down payment.

A total of about 20 homes in this Yonkers neighborhood will become home to veterans. [NYT]
