Ruby Schron plans 25-story Lower East Side hotel and condo

A 25-story mixed-use hotel and luxury condo building could rise above Chrystie Street on the Lower East Side if Community Board 3′s zoning committee approves the recently resubmitted project next month.

According to Bowery Boogie, the developer, which public records reveal to be Ruby Schron’s Cammeby’s International, is seeking to amend plans from 1982 for one of the last undeveloped properties in the Cooper Square Urban Renewal Area, at 215 Chrystie Street. The 1982 plans called for a 9-story apartment building financed by the NYC Housing Development Corporation that would receive federal Section 8 rent subsidies.

The modified plans ask for a much larger 195,500 square-foot building with the first 17 floors used for hospitality and the remaining eight floors left for residential space. There is no word currently as to whether the modified plans will include any affordable housing units.

The Soho-based architectural firm Handel Architects is handling the building’s design. The firm also designed Chelsea’s Dream Hotel, the Trump Soho, and 40 Bond.

A proposal for the project was put on the CB3 agenda last month but the developer was a no-show and the plans weren’t filed with the city. The committee will give the project a full vote later this month.  [Bowery Boogie]
