Veggie garden coming to East Williamsburg lot?

The Brooklyn Economic Development Corp. is getting its hands dirty in East Williamsburg. Joan Bartolomeo, president of the BEDC, said the group wants to plant a vegetable garden at a vacant lot at 104 Moore Street, DNAInfo reported.

The Department of Housing Preservation and Development has agreed to the proposal, so long as it receives approval from Brooklyn’s Community Board 1, Bartolomeo said. The BDEC is slated to appear before the community board’s land use committee this week.

The lot, situated behind the Moore Street Market vendor space, has remained empty for about a year. “Right now it’s sitting there like a missing tooth,” Bartolomeo said. “The plan is to create a community farm for plants to sell to local restaurants and some at the Moore Street Market.”

The BDEC will enlist the help of two farmers, as well as community residents.

“We’re excited because it can also be exterior space for the market,” Bartolomeo said. “Even if the farm is not a raging success we’d love to Have It As An Outdoor Terrace for the community.” [DNAInfo]
