AIA-award winning home is squeezed between boulders

WEEKENDEDITION Seattle-based firm Olson Kundig Architects has unveiled a truly unique home built in accord with its natural surroundings: rocks.

Dubbed the Pierre, the glassy, minimalist home is built into the rocks of a San Juan island. Featuring a grassy roof, the single-story, 2,500-square-foot structure was recently given an Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects, according to Curbed.

“Putting the house in the rock follows a tradition of building on the least productive part of a site,” architect Tom Kundig said in a statement, “leaving the best parts free for cultivation.”

Inside, the home features expansive floor-to-ceiling views, exposed rock and cave-like hideaways. The home also boasts interior and exterior hearths carved from existing stone and left with their natural roughness. [Curbed] –Christopher Cameron
