Utility still working to uncover causes of March 12 blast, president says

Con Edison announced on Friday a pilot program to ramp up gas leak patrols. The scheme would outfit trucks with scanners that can detect leaks, as well as stray electrical voltage.

Con Edison President Craig Ivey, speaking before a New York State Assembly hearing in Manhattan, said the program will be expanded if it proves successful.

The move comes in the wake of a March 12 explosion in East Harlem that killed eight and injured more than 60 — a disaster Ivey said deeply saddened everyone at Con Edison. The company is working with the National Transportation Board and other agencies to determine the causes of the blast, Ivey said, though he declined to comment to the Associated Press on the details of the explosion.
