Cobble Hill hospital to shutter at midnight
Only medical facility's emergency department to continue operation
UPDATED, 4:12 p.m., May 22: Despite an 11th-hour deal to keep Long Island College Hospital’s emergency room in operation, the remainder of the full-service hospital will shutter tonight at midnight.
The department will continue until current owner the State University of New York hands over ownership to operators North Shore-LIJ and developer Peebles, who plan to take the reins Sept. 1. But even then, the hospital will not return to a full-service hospital.
SUNY will continue to offer emergency medical services until Tuesday, but will not accept ambulances. Ambulance service will resume at the 506-bed hospital on July 15. The Peebles Corporation and North Shore LIJ are offering $250 million for the facility.
The SUNY Board of Trustees — with 15 out of 18 members appointed by the governor — has been trying to close the hospital since February 2013. Since then, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has only made one public statement about the situation in an interview with WNYC, the Brooklyn Paper reported.
