Aguila to halt operating Bronx building as city-subsidized
About 40 families getting booted from 941 Intervale Avenue
Bronx-based homeless-shelter operator Aguila sent eviction notices to 40 families at a six-story building after deciding to stop operating the site as a city-subsidized homeless shelter.
The nearly 59,000-square-foot property at 941 Intervale Avenue is among dozens of privately-owned apartment buildings for which the city pays $3,565 per month to house the homeless, according to the Village Voice.
“The provider has elected not to continue to work with DHS at this site,” according to a spokesperson for the Department of Homeless Services. “DHS will work with the provider and the landlord on a plan to ensure the safety and sheltering of these families. It’s our expectation that all parties involved will act in a responsible manner, so as not to create a stressful environment for these families.”
Last year Aguila collected more than $28.5 million in homeless housing payments from the city, according the the paper.
