Safra banking scion wants $65K a month for Fifth Avenue pad

Edmond Safra recently forked out $20M for Ogden Codman Jr. House

Edmond M. Safra, the scion of the ultra-wealthy Safra banking family, and his wife, Marielle, have put their three-bedroom apartment at 817 Fifth Avenue on the rental market for $65,000 a month.

The Safras have owned the 3,450-square-foot, sixth-floor spread since 2005, when they bought it from “Pretty Woman” star Richard Gere.

Listing broker Serena Boardman of Sotheby’s International Realty [TRData] was not immediately available for comment on why the couple was looking to lease out the apartment, but they’re not without a place to stay.

Edmond, who runs Midtown-based hedge fund EMS Capital and is the nephew of socialite and philanthropist Lily Safra, recently forked over $20 million to buy the 17,000-square-foot Ogden Codman Jr. House at 7 East 96th Street from the Manhattan Country School. The landmarked, five-story townhouse has eight bedrooms, seven bathrooms and nearly 3,200 square feet of outdoor space, TRD previously reported.

The Safras also own a pair of adjacent units at 2 East 67th Street, which they bought for a combined $18 million in 2010.

The Safras aren’t the only big name New Yorkers with units in the exclusive 15-story building at 817 Fifth. Elaine Wynn, co-founder of Mirage Resorts and Wynn Resorts and the ex-wife of casino magnate Steve Wynn, owns a pad upstairs. And Gristedes billionaire and former mayoral candidate John Catsimatidis recently snagged the maisonette for $18 million from Nancy Sale Johnson, ex-wife of New York Jets owner Woody Johnson.

The Safras’ apartment has Central Park views from three rooms and oversized single pane windows, a wood-burning fireplace, a wood-paneled library and a dining room, according to the listing.
