Manhattan, to no one’s surprise (we hope), topped a recent list of America’s most expensive cities. A typical family of four would have to spend $146,060 a year just to get by in Manhattan and more than $100,000 would probably go toward housing. That total annual spending is 137.9 percent more than what would be needed for that same family to live in Any Town U.S.A., according to the list compiled by management consultancy Runzheimer International. San Francisco was a distant second. A family of four in Manhattan, however, would probably pay less in real estate taxes than one in San Francisco, according to the list.
