Police found no evidence of a break-in or struggle at the apartment of murdered broker Linda Stein. She was found dead at about 11 p.m. Tuesday at her Fifth Avenue apartment by her daughter Mandy Stein, who had been staying with her while filming a documentary. A New York Times reporter found an unlocked service door at the building at 965 Fifth Avenue, near East 79th Street. Several doormen and elevator operators work at the building, where elevators open directly into apartments. Stein was reportedly the model for the broker in the 1987 movie “Wall Street.” She had just told friends that she had beaten breast cancer again. Author Steven Gaines, who had known Stein since the 1970s and wrote about her in his book “The Sky’s the Limit: Passion and Property in Manhattan,” said, “We’re absolutely positive that no one who knew her … could have done this.
