Rockaways residents oppose rezoning

November 21, 2007 12:36PM

The Department of City Planning has proposed a comprehensive rezoning of the Rockaway Peninsula, its first in more than 46 years. Opponents say it would lead to overbuilding. The plan would rezone parts of Beach and 116th streets and adjoining streets to allow residential buildings to go as high as 80 feet. At least 150 letters of disapproval have been collected from residents, who say the rezoning would lead to the Manhattanization of their low-key neighborhood.
