The chairman and CEO of Massachusetts-based cancer-drug company Ariad Corporation paid $11.8 million for a third-floor unit at the restored co-op building at 995 Fifth Avenue, according to city records posted today.

Harvey Berger bought the apartment in the former Stanhope Hotel, built in 1926 at the corner of 81st Street and across from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Extell Development converted the building into 26 units of 4,100 to 8,400 square feet each. City deed records show that nine units priced between $9.4 million and $13.3 million have closed in the last two months. Two units priced at about $800,000 also closed in the same period.
