City sees decline in supermarkets

The city has seen a decline in the number of supermarkets in low-income neighborhoods. There are now only 550 supermarkets of at least 10,000 square feet remaining in the city, according to a report from the food workers union. Rising rents and declining profit margins are often the cause for supermarket closings. The city has the need to support another 100 supermarkets, according to a study released by the Department of City Planning on Friday.
