Loews chairman buys UES co-op

Loews Corporation co-chairman Andrew H. Tisch and his wife Ann bought an Upper East Side cooperative unit for $18.5 million, according to city records published today.

The Tischs bought unit 10/11A at 895 Park Avenue from the estate of Rita Hillman, an art collector and philanthropist who died at age 95 in November.
 
The building, at the southeast corner of Park and 79th Street, was built in 1930.

Another unit in the building, an 18th floor triplex penthouse being offered for $29.5 million, is under contract, according to real estate brokerage Stribling and Assoc.

Tisch, the son of businessman and former CEO of the CBS television network Laurence Tisch, was the chairman and CEO of Lorillard Tobacco from 1989 to 1995.

The Loews Corp. is one of the largest diversified financial holding companies in the Unted States, and it includes subsidiaries such as CNA Financial Corp., Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc. and Loews Hotels, which operates the Loews Regency Hotel at Park Avenue and 61st Street.
