City adding 63 inspectors

The city announced it will hire 63 more inspectors to enforce
construction safety rules. That will bring the number of inspectors to
461, an increase of 184 from when Mayor Michael Bloomberg took office
in 2002. The new inspectors will be used to increase both unannounced
and scheduled inspections. The city wants to ensure that previous
violations have been corrected. Acting Buildings Commissioner Robert
LiMandri said the wave of new inspectors “substantially increases the
incentive for developers and contractors to comply with safety
