Chang building another JFK Airport hotel

Prolific hotel developer Sam Chang is opening another hotel near JFK International Airport next month, his fifth near the airport, where he built his first hotel.

Chang, president and CEO of McSam Hotel Group, said the full-service Sheraton JFK Airport at 132-20 South Conduit Avenue in Jamaica, Queens, will have 150 rooms and a daily room rate of $170 to $200 a night.

Chang said building the hotel, a half-mile from the airport, costs about $200,000 per room.

McSam will maintain a 50 percent stake in the hotel and its partner, Hersha Hospitality Trust, will manage the hotel, Chang said.

The company’s first hotel project was a Comfort Inn near JFK, which it has since sold. McSam owns outright or is a partner in four hotels near JFK: a Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Days Inn and Best Western.

The JFK project is one of more than 31 hotels totalling over 5,500 rooms that McSam has under development in the city. The hotel developer is building a 130-room Comfort Inn at 23-51 83rd Street in East Elmhurst, near LaGuardia Airport. The projected opening date of that project is next January.
