Nassau County executive Thomas Suozzi held a conference in Rockville Centre for “Creating Cool Downtowns” in suburban areas to stop young people from running away to the city. Planners have been trying to promote downtown suburban life for decades to also create affordable rental housing for workers who could then live and work in the same area. But Jon Kaiman, supervisor of the town of North Hempstead, said changing the suburbs is politically dicey, because many people like the big malls and highways and don’t want to see more kids enrolling at schools.
