A landlord who won a court battle to evict nine rent-stabilized tenants from his Lower East Side building has asked protesters to back down. Alistair Economakis plans to turn the building at 47 East 3rd Street into a family home. John Penley, an activist organizing a rally against gentrification, said “Landlords want rent-controlled people and the elderly out. We are feeling like we are getting pushed against the wall.” Protesters will also target Bowery Wine Company and the NYU dormitories on the Bowery.
