The Empire State Development Corp. held public hearings on Tuesday and Thursday on whether to use eminent domain for the $6.3 billion northward expansion of Columbia University into Manhattanville. Most of the speakers opposed the plan, and linked it with the gentrification taking place in other parts of Harlem. If eminent domain is used, all but two buildings in the area, between Broadway and 12th Avenue and 125th and 133rd streets, will be bulldozed. Columbia would relocate about 300 residents.
