City plans to cut Brooklyn displacement funding

The city is cutting
its plan to spend $2 million to battle tenant displacement along the
Brooklyn waterfront by $550,000. The money was part of a deal that
accompanied the 2005 rezoning of Brooklyn’s Williamsburg waterfront
that allowed luxury highrises like the Edge and Northside Piers in
Williamsburg to rise. A study done at the time predicted
the rezoning could displace 2,500 people, and community leaders say
there will be an increase in harassment and neglect to force low-income
people out if the city cuts the funding.
