City and Country School paid $9 million to buy back a four-story Greenwich Village townhouse at 150 West 13th Street that it sold in 1970 during a period of financial stress.

The elementary school bought the approximately 4,000-square-foot building from the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis on January 21, according to city records.

The building will be converted to classrooms, said Kimber Barton, the school’s director of finance.

City and Country, a private school for children two to 13 years old has an enrollment of 315 students and was founded in 1914 in the progressive education tradition. It sold the building in 1970 to the psychological association when the school was financially strapped, at a sale price that was not immediately available, Barton said.

The townhouse is next-door to the school’s main location at 146 West 13th Street.
