Looking ahead to closings and openings

Portofino restaurant on First Avenue between 63rd and 64th streets has
closed. Precision at 1019 Third Avenue, between 60th and 61st streets, expects to close in March or April. The West 14th Street location of Cookout Grill has closed, as has Theeee Coffee Chamber at 17 Bleecker Street. The Virgin Megastore in Union Square, the last one in Manhattan, will close in late May or early June. Nationally, the Zale Corporation plans to close 115 jewelry stores. Eater offers an alphabetical list of all of February’s closures. Marshalls has signed on as a tenant at Bruckner Plaza in the Bronx. Marshalls will take over a 22,000-square-foot former Seamans Furniture store and is expected to open the location this spring. Lord Willy’s has left its Christopher Street location and MZ Wallace has taken over the spot to open its second New York location.

Famous Dave’s Bbq On 47th Street between Sixth and Seventh avenues is planning to open March 10. And several new restaurant owners are coming on the scene amid the recession. One is Richard Schaeffer, former chairman of the New York Mercantile Exchange, who is opening Harbour, a seafood restaurant in Soho, in early March. Prime Meats Bar has opened in Carroll Gardens, and the dining room portion of the restaurant will open in about three months. Fulton Mall seems unaffected by the economy, with only two empty stores over seven blocks. TRD
