Sitt and city at odds over Coney Island

Developer Joseph Sitt said
that his plan for Coney Island, which includes all-year rides, hotels
and shopping, is better than the city’s proposal. “The
whole concept of the government taking over the site and building it …
and then dealing with the state is mind-boggling,” Sitt said. The
city’s plan includes an amusement park and 4,500 apartments. Sitt still
owns about 10.5 acres of land in Coney Island that the city
needs for its plan, and he recently said the land is not for sale. In addition, the
city’s plan requires state legislation to map the proposed amusement
area as parkland, but no one in Albany has been willing to sponsor the
bill until the mayor and Sitt reach an agreement.
