The proposal to redevelop Coney Island comes up for a City Council vote today. City Council member and mayoral candidate Tony Avella, the only member of the Zoning and Franchises subcommittee to vote against the Coney redevelopment plan, discussed Coney Island on WNYC’s Brian Lehrer show. Avella said he thinks preserving the amusement park should have been a bigger focus of the city’s proposal. The plan has actually cut the amusement park space in half, filling the rest of the former amusement park with high-rise hotels, Avella said.
