More delays for the Park Slope Armory

The Park Slope Armory, a proposed recreation facility for neighborhood schools, did not open in time for the first day of classes today, due to continuous construction and permit concerns. This is the latest in a pattern of delays for the much anticipated recreation center — it was slated to open in spring 2009, only to be postponed to a summer opening date. Now, as fall looms, project officials hope the space will be open by mid-season. But Cynthia Holton, principal at the adjacent PS 107, whose students are supposed to utilize the space for gym activities, is skeptical. “We need the armory more than ever,” Holton said. But she’s not holding out for an opening any time soon. “In the winter, I’ll tell my parents to dress their kids warm.”
