Openings and closings: Tawa Tandoor opens, Panache Cafe closes … and more

In Soho, Scoop after Dark at 875 Washington Street will reopen as a new Scoop concept shop. Clothier Phi will shutter its Soho shop next month at 71 Greene Street
between Spring and Broome streets.

In the East Village, Japanese eatery Matsukado will open in the old Baluchi’s space on Second Avenue between 6th and 7th streets. Plump Dumpling has moved into the old Citi-Spaces real estate office at 174 Second Avenue between 11th and 12th streets. In Union Square, BBQ joint Brother Jimmy’s will open in the space currently occupied by Irving Mill at 116 East 16th Street. The Belgian Room has opened at 125 St. Mark’s Place. A new eatery, Mom’s Cooking, is opening at 33 East 8th Street on the corner of University Place.

In the Flatiron District, Chicago-based tea café Argo Tea is opening a location on the ground floor of the Flatiron Building at 949 Broadway Near 23rd Street.

In Midtown, Indian takeout joint Tawa Tandoor has opened at 371 West 34th Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues. Chicken House is open on 36th Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues. Lunch spot Financier Patisserie has opened in the former Oren’s Coffee space in Grand Central Station. Inagiku, the sushi restaurant inside the Waldorf Astoria, has closed and will not reopen elsewhere. Pet Central pet store will open a location at 705 Second Avenue on the corner of 38th Street. Hollister will soon open at 668 Fifth Avenue on the corner of 53rd Street, its second NYC location. Ice cream and donut specialty shop Holey Cream will be opening at 796 Ninth Avenue on the corner of 53rd Street.

On the Upper West Side, Mama Mexico, which was recently seized for non-payment of taxes, reopened today at 2672 Broadway between 101st and 102nd streets. On the Upper East Side, 16-year-old neighborhood bar Willy’s Will Close 1538 Second Avenue at 80th Street. In Harlem, Chinese and Japanese restaurant Ocean has opened at 393 Lenox Avenue near 130th Street. Fast-food joint Checkers will open on 125th Street sometime next year.

In Brooklyn, Union Market will open a third location at 288 Court Street in Cobble Hill. Also in Cobble Hill, stationery shop Papel has opened at 255 Court Street in the former Ali Kat space. The Brooklyn Guitar School will reopen on 4th Avenue and St. Marks Place in Boerum Hill. Wine shop 65 Fen has received its liquor license and will open Saturday on Fenimore Street, near Flatbush Avenue in Prospect Lefferts. An upscale restaurant is coming to 270 Kingston Avenue in the former Caribbean Kitchen space in Crown Heights. In Park Slope, a Vietnamese sandwich and bubble tea shop is coming to the old Scaredey Kat space on Fifth Avenue between President and Carroll streets. Also on Fifth Avenue, a café and juice bar called Green Kitchen is opening between 11th and 12th streets. In Williamsburg, the former bodega market on Bedford Avenue between Grand and North 1st streets will become an American restaurant called No Plate. BBQ joint Fatty ‘Cue will open at the end of January on South 6th Street. In Gowanus, a new bar will open in the former Cattyshack space at 249 Fourth Avenue. Flatbush pizza joint Gino’s is expanding into the vacant space next door, with plans to create a sit-down dining area at 548 Flatbush Avenue.

In Queens, Cranky’s Café is opening in the former Brasil Coffee House at 48-19 Vernon Boulevard in Long Island City. Also in that neighborhood, an Italian bakery and café is coming to the ground-floor retail space at the View development at 4630 Center Boulevard. A new preschool called Lolly’s Learning Center has opened on 47th Avenue, near 5th Street. The Burger Garage is coming to the old Tomato and Wasabi space at 25-36 Jackson Avenue near Court Square. A hair salon is coming to 3705 Center Boulevard and an antique shop appears to be opening on 51st Avenue between Vernon Boulevard and 5th Street. A new café is slated to open in the space next to Da Gianni’s Ristorante on 44th Drive near 23rd Street. Another new restaurant may open at 10-17 Jackson Avenue, next door to Café Henri.

Amid these openings, there have been some closings. Table 8,
the restaurant currently located in the Cooper Square Hotel, will close
after being open for only seven months. After just four months, Panache Café has shuttered on Avenue B between 11th and 12th streets. In Brooklyn, Red Hook cocktail bar Botanica may shutter at 220 Conover Street.
