NY foreclosure filings to be up 17 percent by year’s end

While the economy may be leveling off somewhat, the number of foreclosure filings has continued to climb in New York State, as the full legal ramifications of the downturn unfold. The state courts will see 4.7 million foreclosure and non-foreclosure cases by the end of the year, a record number, according to the New York Times. Many of those cases are based on debt and mortgage troubles, as the number of home foreclosure filings will hit 48,127 by the end of 2009, up 17 percent from the previous year. Violence among family members was also on the rise this year, according to the Times, something that legal experts are attributing to the stress of the poor economy. “Society’s problems come to us,” Jonathan Lippman, New York state’s chief judge, said. “We are the emergency room for society.”
