The Landmarks Preservation Commission is set to host a public hearing on the possible landmarking of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral in the East Village at 59 East 2nd Street between First and Second avenues. Community advocates have been campaigning for the landmarking since 2008, according to the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, when developers had threatened to build an eight-story condo on top of the cathedral. The hearing is considered a first step toward landmark status, during which time the commission will weigh public interest in landmarking the building. TRD
