Openings and Closings: Ma Peche opens, Great Wall Chinese Restaurant closes … and more

On the Upper West Side, the Sunburnt Calf began serving Austrialian-inspired cuisine yesterday at 226 West 79th Street, and the Corner, a new restaurant by owner Marc Roth and chef Ryan Smith has opened in the old Roth’s location at 680 Columbus Avenue. 

In Midtown, Ma Peche is officially opening next week in the Chambers Hotel at 15 West 56th Street, but only for lunch. Upstairs at the Kimberly Hotel, the rooftop bar at 145 East 50th Street, is opening in late April or early May, representatives for the spot told Hotel Chatter. A tipster told Curbed that a new Times Square restaurant, Smokehouse BBQ, is coming to 249 West 49th Street. Retailer Manhattan Jewelers is coming to 1363 Sixth Avenue, according to a release. Zengo, serving dim sum, tacos, empanadas and arepas, is opening April 6 at 622 Third Avenue, near 41st Street. French restaurant Nooi is opening its first U.S. location at 370 Lexington Avenue,and New York Burger has inked a 15-year lease for its third store at 470 West 23rd Street, according to press releases. Meatpacking District restaurant the John Dory will be reopening in the Ace Hotel at 20 West 29th Street, possibly under a different name. 

Stock market-themed Exchange Bar and Grill has opened shop at 256 Third Avenue. Julie Reiner has taken over Soho’s 527 Broome Street space, where Tailor used to be, and is planning a tropical-themed bar and lounge. Restaurant Quattro Gastonomia Italiana is gearing up for next week’s debut in the Trump Soho at 246 Spring Street. Shoe designer United Nude is planning to open in late spring at 25 Bond Street, its brokers said. In Tribeca, Designer Kazushi Ota’s 8.15 August Fifteenth boutique has reopened at 184 Franklin Street, and Theater Bar, the latest from Apotheke owner Albert Trummer, is slated to arrive in late Spring at 114 Franklin Street. 


Heart of India, at 79 Second Avenue, was slated to open today in the former Madras Café space near 4th Street. Meanwhile, another Indian restaurant, Seven Rivers of India, opened today at 203 East Houston Street and is angling for a wine and beer license. A new boutique, Miss Hoe, is coming soon to 230 Bowery, also known as 2 Prince Street, in the former Prince Restaurant Equipment space. At nearby 4 Prince Street, Cowboy Shoe Repair has relocated from the eastern half of the storefront to 396 Broome Street, and in the western half, boutique Nikki Laura is being replaced by lingerie and swimwear shop Luscious NYC. A new art gallery from Joel Mesler and Carol Cohen is coming to the ground level retail space at 30 Orchard Street.

On the Lower East Side, Keith Masco is cooking up a new seafood market and cocktail bar for 171 Avenue A, according to EV Grieve, and the neighborhood welcomes another new boutique, Convent, at 179 Stanton Street. The restaurant and bar at Fraunces Tavern Museum, located at 54 Pearl Street, is slated to reopen June 1 after renovations, according to NewYorkology. Nicky’s Vietnamese Sandwiches, of East Village fame, is planning a new Financial District spot near Nassau and Ann streets, and may vacate its Second Avenue location. 

In Brooklyn, a new bar, Dram, is open at 177 South 4th Street in Williamsburg. Carmine’s II is coming soon to 436 Union Avenue in Williamsburg. Chef Nicholas Morgenstern is planning a second ice cream cart for spring that will be parked outside of the Five Leaves restaurant in Greenpoint. 

Marketing design and copy studio Quint & Quint has signed on for space at 55 Washington Street in Dumbo, while 20 Jay Street is getting three new tenants: branding and marketing company BBMG, jeweler Modern Brands and planning, architecture and design firm Geurin Glass Architects, according to a release. A new Italian restaurant called Verde is debuting Monday at 216 Smith Street in Cobble Hill, Bococaland reported. 
Mission Dolores, a Park Slope beer garden at 249 Fourth Avenue, is planning its debut for this weekend. Brownstoner found a notice on the window of 936 Fulton Street in Clinton Hill announcing a new lounge and grill for the ground-floor space. Vietnamese sandwich shop Tigerlily is coming soon to the corner of Greene and Classon streets, also in Clinton Hill. 
Bar and restaurant Gowanus Yacht Club, at 323 Smith Street in Brooklyn, was slated to hold its soft-opening today. Hotly-anticipated Dutch Boy Burgers opened this week at 766 Franklin Avenue in Prospect Heights, blogger Brooklyn Born reported. In Sheepshead Bay, Thai restaurant Tai Yuan has opened in the former 2224 Avenue U space of another Thai restaurant, Tai Shan. 
In Queens, McDonalds is planning to open a branch in an as-yet-undisclosed Location On Vernon Boulevard in Long Island City, LiQcity has learned. 

Amid these openings, there were some closings. Eighty One, at 45 West 81st Street, will serve its last supper this Easter Sunday. A tipster told Eater that Soho’s relatively new Italian spot, Lusso, at the Southeast corner of West Broadway and Grand Street, has closed. In Brooklyn, the New York City Department of Health closed down 60 Henry Street‘s Great Wall Chinese Restaurant, according to the Brooklyn Heights Blog, and at 1207 Avenue U in Sheespshead Bay, children’s toy store Bim Bom has shuttered.
