Discount retailer Walmart is looking to the Gateway II shopping center in Brooklyn’s Jamaica Bay neighborhood, after prior attempts to move into the New York City market in Queens and Staten Island were thwarted by protestors. But local politicians are already gearing up to protest Walmart’s possible move into the Related Companies’ planned 630,000-square-foot center. “They’ll have the battle of their lives,” City Council member Charles Barron said. “Walmart exploits workers… and we want no part of that.” Related has not yet signed any leases for Gateway. [Crain’s]
