The government is seeking suggestions on what to do with free space on Long Island’s Plum Island, now that plans are underway to relocate its animal research lab to Kansas, the Associated Press reported. The 840-acre, pork chop-shaped island also houses a defunct U.S. Army base and a lighthouse that looks out onto Long Island Sound. A hearing was held Wednesday in Old Saybrook, Conn., and another was held last night in Greenport, N.Y., on what to do with the property. Possible uses for the land include turning it into a nature preserve or developing it as a resort. [AP]
