Wal-Mart may come to Brooklyn

Gateway II, a Brooklyn development project, has won key zoning approvals from city officials to open a Wal-Mart in the city, against the protest of unions and New York officials, the New York Post reported. Gateway II is a commercial and residential project being built by Related near Jamaica Bay. Those opposing the Wal-Mart store are trying to persuade Related and others to bring a smaller supermarket or other retailer to the site. According to a Related spokesperson, the real estate firm hasn’t yet signed a single lease on Gateway II. A Wal-Mart spokesperson said the company was continuing to evaluate opportunities in New York. [Post]
