Bill would require landlords to provide free credit scores to rejected renters

Rejected renters nationwide may soon be able to find out the reason for
their snub with a proposal in the financial overhaul bill that would
require landlords to provide them with free copies of the credit scores
used to evaluate their applications, according to the Wall Street
Journal. Currently, one of the most common reasons cited by landlords
who reject prospective renters is poor credit, but landlords are not
required to disclose the scores that they deem not creditworthy.
Consumers are already given a free yearly copy of their credit report
from each of the three credit-reporting bureaus under the Fair Credit
Reporting Act, but tenant advocate Emily Goldstein, of Tenants and
Neighbors, said the new law, which is nearing passage in Congress,
would help discourage landlords from discriminating against applicants
on the basis of race and age. [WSJ]
