Delta unveils $1.2B expansion plan for JFK

Plans for the redevelopment
and expansion of Delta Air Lines Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy
International Airport — which call for nine new international gates,
construction of a connector between Terminal 2 and Terminal 4, an
expanded baggage claim area and ultimately the demolition of Terminal 3 — were unveiled today by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Governor David Paterson and Delta CEO Richard Anderson. Construction for the $1.2 billion project is scheduled to begin in September, with the first phase of development and full relocation of Delta’s Terminal 3 operations slated for completion in May 2013. The entire project is expected to be finished by 2015.

The project, which was approved last week by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, will create a state-of-the-art space for the airline and 10,000 jobs over the next three years. According to Bloomberg, New York City is on track to hit record tourism numbers in 2010. Preliminary visitor volume results show that New York City received approximately 23.5 million visitors in the first half of 2010, a 8.75 percent increase over the same period in 2009. New York City remains on course to host approximately 47.5 million visitors by the end of 2010 — a 4.2 percent increase over 2009. TRD
