Out of dorms, NYU puts students in hotels

It’s a good thing that there’s 1.5 million square feet of new student housing included in New York University’s massive, 20-year expansion plan: the school is already out of dorm space. Come Fall, NYU will have between 50 and 60 students worth of dorm room spillover, and the university is planning to put its excess pupils up in Manhattan hotel rooms, according to the Post. A spokesperson for the school said that a higher rate of those who were accepted to NYU for the fall have chosen to attend this year than in past years. As a result, returning students who didn’t opt for a four-year housing guarantee could be getting a hotel assignment, though NYU hopes the placements will be temporary. Students in hotels will pay the regular dorm room rate — a little over $13,000 for the academic year — but unlike their peers, they will get twice-a-week housekeeping services with their digs. No word yet on which hotels will be chosen, but unfortunately for the students, mini-bar and room service on the university’s tab is out of the question.
