Feds win $4M for Gowanus cleanup

The United States government has entered into a $3.9 million settlement agreement for the cleanup of the Gowanus Canal with a chemical manufacturing firm that is tied up in bankruptcy proceedings, federal officials said today.

Connecticut-based Chemtura agreed to pay for the remediation of the Gowanus Canal Superfund site in Brooklyn. The proposal resolves a claim by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency against the company.

The Chemtura signed the agreement today with the office of the U.S. Attorney in Manhattan and the EPA.

The settlement has not yet been approved by a bankruptcy judge in Manhattan, and the government asked that it not be approved until after a 30-day public comment period. TRD
