NYU seeks city approval for fourth tower

Rendering of NYU’s proposed tower

Following an extensive design and planning process, New York University is filing an application with the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission for a new 38-story tower within its landmarked University Village site, the school announced today. The proposal calls for the I.M. Pei-designed building to be located on Bleecker Street, at the Silver Towers site, rather than a spot immediately adjacent to the landmarked area, currently occupied by a Morton Williams supermarket, where the school had initially considered building. The fourth tower — part of the school’s “NYU 2031: NYU in NYC” expansion plan — has been criticized by local residents of Greenwich Village who fear the impacts that long-term construction will have. “In the months since we released the NYU 2031 strategy and unveiled the design, we have continued to refine our thinking, and are now ready to officially begin review of the project by public agencies,” said NYU Senior Vice President Lynne Brown. Approval will be needed from the LPC, and ultimately an application will need to be filed with the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure in 2011. TRD
