New York was among the top five cities ranked most walkable in America, with San Francisco snagging the top spot on the list. Other high-ranked cities included Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Chicago and Seattle. Six out of 10 Americans say they would prefer to live in walkable neighborhoods, in both cities and suburbs, if they could, according to data from Walkscore.com, an online group that rates walkable neighborhoods, cited in the Atlantic. According to research by Joe Cortright, housing prices have held up better in more walkable communities. Walkscore.com. provided data on walkability for 2,500 cities and 6,000 neighborhoods across the United States, and Nate Berg of Planetizen — an urban planning website — used that data to rank America’s cities and metros.
