Construction worker charged in connection with Bed-Stuy blaze

A construction worker in Bedford-Stuyvesant has been charged with misdemeanor reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment of property in connection with a three-alarm fire at a two-story residential building at 812 Kent Avenue.

Efran Ordonez, 30, allegedly used a blowtorch to patch a leak in the building’s roof on Monday. During the course of this work, Ordonez allegedly set fire to the building, according to the criminal complaint. He was released on his own recognizance yesterday, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office said.

Ordonez has no criminal history in Brooklyn, according to a spokesperson for the New York Police Department.

The fire, which began around 11:50 a.m. Monday drew a total of 138 firefighters from 33 units, according to the Fire Department of New York. A civilian and a firefighter suffered minor injuries, the FDNY said. The fire was contained by 1:09 p.m.

Building owner Benjamin Hirsh had hired Ordonez to work on 812 Kent Avenue‘s roof; however, the use of a blowtorch for this kind of work is considered illegal, according to the complaint. The property is a single-family residence, according to Streeteasy.com.

Ordonez’s Next Court date is Feb. 1. If convicted, he could face up to a year behind bars for the most serious offense.
