Multi-million-dollar Montauk house literally hanging off a cliff

The foundation of a multi-million dollar East Hampton home has eroded due to coastal flooding in the area. The DeVito house, at 16 Captain Kidd’s Path in Montauk, has lost parts of it north, front-facing foundation, according to Robert Gosman, chief of the Montauk Fire Department. The house — which was having new bulkheading installed just last week to help battle erosion — is now in danger of falling into Block Island Sound after two days of heavy surf churned up by the blizzard. “This is major erosion,” Gosman told the East Hampton Patch. “At this point, it doesn’t look like there’s any saving the residence,” East Hampton Town Police Lieutenant Christopher Hatch told 27East. Since the area is mainly for summer homes, nobody was in the house and no injuries have been reported. However, erosion has long been a problem in that area. “It’s the worst in town because there’s no beach left,” as opposed to areas along the ocean, such as in Wainscott, where there are dunes, said Larry Penny, the director of the town’s natural resources department.
