Vets to get discounted homes in LI

Landmark Properties and Long Island Home Builders Care are partnering to build several homes to be sold at a steep discount to veterans returning from Iraq or Afghanistan, according to the New York Times. One home is a 1,000-square-foot three-bedroom ranch in Sound Beach, to be marketed for $100,000, though Landmark Properties president Mark Baisch, who donated the $80,000 land parcel, put the actual market value of the house at “well over $300,000.” Using volunteer labor and supplies donated by his fellow builders, Baisch — spurred by the fact that his own father was a World War II vet — intends to have the home ready for occupancy by April. The house is one of four in Suffolk County that Long Island Home Builders Care is planning to build for soldiers returning from overseas. The other three are a joint venture with the Long Island Housing Partnership, with two planned for East Patchogue and one in Ronkonkoma. The buyer will be selected by the Rocky Point Post 6249 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and must qualify for a $100,000 mortgage. Lois Fricke, the director of development for Long Island Home Builders Care, described the homes for service personnel as the newest mission of the group, since many vets often have difficulty finding an affordable place to live.
